About the National Service Scheme

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a prominent youth-oriented programme launched by the Government of India in 1969, commemorating the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. Run under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, its core objective is to develop the personality and character of students through community service, guided by the ideal of “Not Me, But You.” This motto reflects the essence of democratic living and emphasises selfless service, social responsibility and collective welfare.

NSS provides an opportunity for students to actively participate in nation-building activities while pursuing their academic studies. The scheme aims to instil values such as discipline, leadership, cooperation, social harmony and empathy towards marginalised and vulnerable sections of society. By engaging students in real-life social issues, NSS bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience, and fosters national consciousness and civic responsibility among youth.

“Not Me, But You”

The guiding motto of the NSS — a reminder to place service to others above the self, and to work for the welfare of the community and the nation.
